Psalm 46:1 reminded us that day how God is our protector, refuge, and strength—always there to lend a helping hand in times of trouble.
Recently, Brad and I were enjoying a crisp, clear fall day, sitting outside surrounded by trees with leaves turning vibrant shades of red, orange, and gold. As we relaxed together, a large, iridescent butterfly with striking blue and black wings danced past us, its delicate flight catching the sunlight. My heart longed for it to linger just a moment longer. Brad was pointing into the forest at a small deer walking near us, but my gaze was drawn back to a nearby rock, where that very butterfly had settled, its patterned wings folded at rest. As the afternoon faded and a cold breeze began to sweep through, I watched and wondered, unsure whether it was still alive; it hadn’t moved in a while. In a moment of curiosity and compassion, I reached out my hand, and to my delight, the butterfly crawled onto my open palm, its tiny legs gripping gently. Without thinking, I decided to take it inside to warm it up by a lamp.

Now, Google can be a handy tool in moments like this. I discovered that many butterflies undertake migrations spanning thousands of miles to reach warmer climates during the winter. Others, unable to migrate, slow their metabolism significantly as the chill sets in, seeking shelter beneath tree bark or nestled within leaf litter on the forest floor. Without proper protection, these vulnerable creatures face the peril of freezing temperatures and may not survive the winter.
After a while, I offered my hand once more, and the butterfly willingly returned. I opened the door, and it fluttered away gracefully. In that moment, I felt a profound sense of connection and gratitude for that small act of kindness.
Isn’t this a perfect picture of our relationship with God? When we are exhausted and weary, weighed down by the burdens of life—whether grief, fear, or uncertainty—He gently reaches out to lift us up. He carries us through our darkest, coldest moments, providing strength and comfort when we need it most. Truly, He is our ever-present help in times of need, always there to guide us home.
