‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”
Jesus declared this in the midst of his 40-day fast. He encountered the first of many temptations, and he was hungry, and the devil hit him at that moment. But Jesus didn’t falter. No, he stood firm on the solid ground of God’s Word.
Matthew recounts the moment when the tempter drew near, reminding us that it’s not a matter of if temptation will come knocking, but when.
This temptation wasn’t about grand riches or extravagant pleasures; it was about something as simple as bread.
Jesus didn’t just shrug off Satan’s advances. No, he met them head-on with the truth of scripture.
By quoting Deuteronomy 8:3, Jesus showed us that the very words that flow from the mouth of God are more nourishing to our souls and provide for a spiritual battle than any physical sustenance could ever do.
Now, when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”
The written Word is our daily bread.
Mat 4:4 – But he answered, “It is written,
“‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
It is written!
Oh, let me tell you the beautiful truth of how Jesus, in His infinite wisdom and love, chose to face the battle against Satan as a mere man. Yes, He had the power to send that deceiver packing to the ends of the universe, but oh, how He resisted in a way that speaks directly to our hearts.
In His humanity, our precious Savior did not rely on some grand spiritual force beyond our reach. He showed us how He chose to combat the enemy with the very Word of God.
He didn’t call upon resources inaccessible to us; He fought with the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. He could have revealed new truths, but instead, He declared, “It is written.”
Oh, how Jesus used the Word of God as a mighty weapon against temptation! And just as He did, we, too, can stand firm against the lure of sin by shining the radiant light of God’s truth upon the lies of the enemy.
If we lack knowledge of God’s Word, we will find ourselves ill-equipped for the battle.
So open the Word and eat; let us immerse ourselves in His Word and stand firm against the temptations that come our way.

Jesus taught us how to pray. He said, “Therefore, pray in this manner.”

Just as physical bread sustains our bodies, Jesus sustains our souls and gives us eternal life. We must come to Him daily, seeking to be filled with His presence and His word. Just as we need physical food to survive, we need spiritual food to thrive in this world.
When we partake of the Bread of Life, we are filled with peace, joy, and contentment that can only come from being in communion with God. We are reminded that our true sustenance comes from Him alone and that nothing else in this world can truly satisfy us even our deepest longings.
So come to Jesus, the Bread of Life, and feast on His goodness and grace. And allow Him to fill you with His love and presence and satisfy your every need. May you never hunger or thirst again, for in Him, we find true and lasting fulfillment.
